What Causes an Engine Warning Light?

The check engine light (MIL) is your engine management system telling you it has recorded a fault. It is not a diagnosis on its own — it is the start of one.
What the light actually means
When the ECU detects a reading outside its expected range, it stores a fault code and lights the MIL. The code identifies the circuit or condition, not necessarily the broken part. A P0171 (system too lean), for example, can come from a vacuum leak, a weak fuel pump, a dirty mass airflow sensor or a lazy oxygen sensor — four very different repairs.
Most common causes
- Ignition faults — worn spark plugs or failing coils causing misfires (P0300 series codes)
- Air/vacuum leaks — cracked hoses or intake gaskets upsetting the fuel mixture
- Lambda (O2) sensor faults — incorrect readings corrupt the fuel mixture
- EGR system faults — valves sticking open or blocked with carbon
- DPF blockages — soot loading on diesel engines that mostly do short trips
- Fuel delivery faults — weak pumps, clogged filters, injector problems
- Loose or worn fuel cap — a genuine, if frustrating, cause of evaporation codes
Should you keep driving?
A steady light with normal engine behaviour usually means the fault is not immediately damaging — book a diagnosis soon. A flashing light, or a light combined with rough running, misfiring or loss of power, means stop driving: active misfires dump unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter and can destroy it in minutes.
How proper diagnosis works
A professional diagnosis reads the codes, the freeze-frame data (the conditions when the fault set), and the live sensor data, then tests the specific circuit involved. At AutoLogic Diagnostics in Witbank, every engine light diagnosis is supported by MechanIQ Diagnostic Intelligence, which evaluates the evidence and confirms the root cause before any repair is recommended.
